Snow Loaded Rooftops

With winter on the way, now is a good time to take inventory of your roof. Snow and ice accumulation can cause roof collapse when a roof is not strong enough to resist the load.

There are many factors that lead to snow-induced structural failures, including a roof’s shape, slope, construction, maintenance, exposure to wind, and type of snow. Wet, heavy snow can weigh over 20 lbs. per square foot. Ice weighs even more.

Always use extreme caution when removing snow. A few good tips:

Ask a structural engineer to look at the roof system to see if sufficient bracing has been installed and if corrosion or rot has weakened the structure.
Use a snow roof rake which allows you to stand on the ground in a safe place.
Use fall protection equipment whenever on a roof.
Position and secure ladders so they do not fall if snow slides off the roof.
Remove snow in narrow strips instead of large areas.
Use plastic shovels or wooden roof rakes to avoid damaging roofing material.
Do not pick or chip at ice near the roof surface to avoid damaging roofing material.
